How to Shift from A Comparison Mindset to a present focused mindset

It’s easy to get stuck in the past and what we could have done and our “shoulds” or we are filled with anxiety about the future wondering how things will play out. Generally, when we fantasize about the past, it is indeed a fantasy. We remember the best moments and compare to our current reality without all the information.

For me, I tend to focus on the future and can easily fall into a state of “needing to control” instead of grounding myself in the present. Control is a false sense of grounding - I use this mantra for myself often when I’m feeling anxious about next week, next month or even next year.

We can train ourselves into shifting from a comparison mindset to the present moment. The more we practice, the more automatic it will become, we can find a sense of peace and focus on the present.

Here are some prompts to reflect on to begin shifting your mindset to the present:

Where can I grow today?

Reflect on what you can do today to learn more about yourself. This could be trying a new craft, journaling, trying a new meditation or yoga class. Dive in to yourself and listen deeply.

What are three things I’m grateful for today?

This is something I’m a big fan of, I write three things I’m grateful for every day to root myself in the present moment. They don’t necessarily have to be profound, it could be your morning coffee or something bigger like your family or chosen family.

How can I show myself kindness and care today?

Take note of how you can be gentle with yourself today. This could be many things, like saying “no” to something that will drain you, it could be saying “yes” to yourself and taking a long bath or watching a show that’s been on your list.

How can I lend myself today to my community today?

Especially now, there are many ways we can support our local or global community. Anything as small as buying gifts from a local store or ordering takeout from a local restaurant or something larger like organizing a fundraiser for a cause you care about.

It can be easy to compare ourselves to others, compare our present to our past or even a dream in the future. One key to Mindfulness and joy is focusing on the present and finding joy and gratitude in this space. There is no perfect formula to Mindfulness and present awareness, but we can take small steps each day to strengthen our practice and build resilience.
