The Importance of Savoring Stillness & Self-Rediscovery

The past few months have been a huge shift for all of us. During this time of change and uncertainty, we tend to anxiously wait for what's next or dreaming of the past. Acknowledging these feelings is important, but there is an opportunity to savor the stillness we're experiencing and rediscover ourselves.

Typically in today's culture, we're going from one thing to the next with little present awareness. Thankfully, we've been learning the importance of mindfulness and many people have started a practice. Now that we are experiencing an abundance of stillness, we can shift our mindset towards savoring and self-rediscovery.

This stillness can look like a silent breakfast, if you live with someone you can still have breakfast together and practice a silent breakfast together by savoring your time together and the food you're enjoying. While I was doing my yoga teacher training, for the few weeks we were together for the intensive, we had a silent breakfast every day. This was an amazing opportunity to pause, enjoy, and savor while enjoying the company of others. If you're living alone, this is also a great practice. While we're alone we can tend to distract ourselves from our own thoughts by scrolling through our phones or listening to music. Challenge yourself to sit with yourself and enjoy your breakfast. Smell every smell, savor every bite, and take in the nourishment of this practice.

Savoring moments of silence and stillness can help us detox from the constant stimulation we feel from work, technology, and our other obligations. This reset is important to our energy sustainability as well as our overall happiness. Allowing us to have more energy, patience, and gratitude in our everyday lives.

While we're in this mode of stillness, we have another opportunity to rediscover ourselves. We can be reminded of what brings us joy and who or what we miss the most. Take time to note which friends and family members you're spending the most time messaging or video chatting with, what hobbies are you rediscovering or what new hobbies are you starting, and imagine what it would look like to make time for those things in your everyday life.

While we're experiencing this abundance of stillness - savor the pause. Get to know yourself better, build a healthy relationship with yourself - it lasts a lifetime.
